What Can We Do?

During this Christmas season, while dark things are happening in our nation, and the world, it is easy to seek escape in twinkly lights, frantic shopping, in plans, parties, and pretend.

But we cannot escape what we hear and see on the news.  There is a foreboding sense that disaster could happen at any time and anywhere. For some, it already has.

We hear of decisions being made that make no sense, that threaten our safety.  People in high authority who are supposed to protect us but instead are releasing their grip on good sense and allowing .....

What can we do? What can we ordinary people do who feel helpless to effect any change? We vote, we obey the law, we give to the poor, but that isn't enough.

We can pray.

II Chronicles 7:14 still applies to us: If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

You say I’m not able
I’m too young or I’m too old
And I can’t sing or teach
And no title do I hold
Lord, what can I do?
For I want to do my part
And I want to help the hurting
With all of my heart

I can pray until the walls come down
Until there’s healing all around
That’s something I can do
I can pray in my secret place
Calling on your name
That’s something I can do
I can pray

Verse 2
My family shows no interest
My child has gone so far
Though I try my best to reach them
Their hearts just seem so hard
Lord what can I do?
To help bring them back to you
For my family’s lost and dying
And my words don’t get through

Repeat Chorus

You may not be a preacher
You may not be a Sunday school teacher
You may not be able to sing
But friend there’s something we all can do

You can pray
In your secret place
Calling on his name
That’s something you can do

You can pray, I can pray, we can pray
I can pray, you can pray
I know you hear us Lord when we pray
We will pray
I will pray
Will you pray?

  1. We were just discussing this last night at the dinner table...thank you Barbara for this...many Blessings to you.

  2. The power of prayer is beyond measure! Yes, we can pray!!

  3. The power of prayer is mighty indeed. Sometimes John teases me if I say, "All we can do is pray." He responds with a whimper and says, "Oh dear. It's come to that!" Point well taken. Pray early; pray often!
